The town was founded in 1881 by John Balch and his brother James Balch. In 1903, they named their new town after Benjamin Fenton, 3rd Viscount Chesterfield. By 1907, the town had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1967, Balch Springs became an independent city when it merged with Arlington Heights to form Arlington County. As a result of this merger, many jobs were lost from Arlington Heights that moved to Balch Springs; however, as of 2012 most jobs have returned to Arlington Heights since that city's mayor announced in October 2011 that he would not seek re-election in 2014 because he felt too much competition from Balch Springs Mayor Daryl Turner for funding and services within the city limits. Balch Springs is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town started as a frontier outpost on the banks of the Brazos River in 1836 by John C Balch and his family. In 1840, he founded what would become Balch Springs Academy which still exists today. In 1865, General Sam Houston named this post for Major General James Fenton USMC (1816-1892), one of his subordinates during the Mexican War and one of Houston's most trusted advisors. In 1887, JF Balch donated land to build what would become Texas Southern University in downtown Balch Springs. That same year also saw the first organized football game played in Texas when Dallas Cowboys' quarterback William "Pete" Dickson threw a high school touchdown pass against Sealy High School from neighboring Fort Worth. In 1909, Dr Jesse Lipscomb opened St Mary's Hospital in downtown Balch Springs which became an important health care center for residents of central Johnson County. On November 16th 1915 local resident Wm Gentry founded The Dallas Morning News here becoming one of only two newspapers ever published outside New York City before it was acquired by The Tribune Company in 1967 and merged into their chain Tribune Media company along with other newspapers such as The Kansas City Star and Chicago Sun-Times
