On July 1, 1892, Balch Springs was officially incorporated as a city. It is the oldest city in Dallas County and one of the earliest cities in Texas. The first gun sight in Balch Springs was a blacksmith’s shop on Elm Street. The store was built by John Witherspoon and his son-in-law, James Ransom. After World War I, balch springs began to prosper as a center for cotton production. In 1925, the United States Post Office moved from its original location at Main and Elm Streets to what is now Jackson Avenue near Three Rivers Boulevard. In 1933, the US Park Service acquired land adjacent to Jackson Avenue for future parkland. On May 17, 1934, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed an executive order creating Dallas County. The purchase of the land from the United States Post Office led to new development in Balch Springsincluding the erection of two gun sights: One on Main Street and one on State Highway 362 just east of US Highway 280. In 1949, Houston businessman Jock Mahoney donated land west of US Highway 281 for use as a public park called Jock Mahoney Park

The first store in Balch Springs was built on the corner of Third and Elm Streets in 1887. The store became known as the "Old White House" because it served as the town's headquarters from its inception. In 1907, the Spindletop oil well was discovered in nearby Sweetwater County and led to an increase in business for the Old White House. The store closed its doors for good in 1936 but reopened several years later under new management when oil production increased again. In 1951, Beecham-Langdon Corporation opened a grocery store on Main Street which continued to be one of Balch Springs' mainstay businesses until it shut down in 1984 due to competition from local stores grow larger and began implementing more aggressive pricing policies than their predecessors had ever seen. In recent years, Balch Springs has experienced significant growth thanks to its location within Midland County and its status as a bedroom community for Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas. As such, there has been an increase in development around town including a number of high-end restaurants and bars that have attracted celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan. Additionally, numerous retail establishments have moved into downtown Balch Springs since 2007 due to increasing demand from residents and visitors alike for greater exposure within this historically small town situated only 10 miles (16 km) east of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport on IH 35W.
