Balch Springs, TX is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of Balch Springs was 98% White and 1% Black. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 2% of the population. Balch Springs was founded in 1879 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a Mormon community on what is now the eastern edge of Midland County. In 1898 it became an American Tobacco Company subsidiary town and remained that way until 1984 when it became an official municipality within Midland County. The original name for Balch Springs Township (now part of east Dallas) was "Dalhart." The town's first post office opened in 1879 and closed in 1880 because no mail could be delivered to the tiny settlement due to its distance from Austin and other larger towns. A new post office opened in 1882 and operated until 1907 when it merged with neighboring Dentonville to form one large post office called "Dentonville". In 1909, Balch Springs incorporated as a municipality under state law following a referendum vote by its citizens. On July 16, 1924, during World War II, Balch Springs became an important airfields located between Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and Mesquite Air National Guard Base due to their strategic location near central Texas providing essential flying waters for fighter planes engaged in battle against Japan throughout the war effort. 1/2 mile wide airstrip with 4 runways served over 1000 aircraft daily at various times during WW2; primary use being bombing missions over Japan which were then released back into Japanese airspace so they couldn't bomb Pearl Harbor

Balch Springs was founded on August 29, 1881 by John Fenton and his wife Mary Cramer as a small community named "Barlow". The name change came about because early settlers wanted to avoid confusion with nearby Bartow, Oklahoma. The first post office in Balch Springs opened in 1882. In 1904, the town incorporated and became known as "Balch Springs." On December 15, 1907, the first oil well was drilled in what is now Balch Springs. The well went dry but active exploration continued until 1909 when it finally stopped due to financial reasons. The discovery of oil in western Texas made Balch Springs an important center for energy production and trade during World War I and World War II. By 1945, Balch Spring had become one of the largest citiesowntown in Texas with over 50% of its residents employed within industry or services associated with that sector of economic activity. At its peak during the late 1940s-early 1950s Balch Springs had over 1 million residents living primarily within walking distance of downtown business districts and other major tourist attractions including three large shopping malls (the Garland Mall (now part of Fairchild Place mall), Enterprise Center mall and Midtown). At its low point following Interstate 10 construction through downtown between 1949 and 1951 most businesses closed or moved out as traffic increased around I-10 instead which led to decline in population from 1951 until 1987 when growth resumed although employment levels have remained below pre-recession levels since 2000%.
