Balch Springs was founded in 1872 by David B. Balch and his wife Sarah C. Smith as a railtown on the Butterfield Overland Mail Railway between Dallas and Fort Worth. Baldwin Elementary School is one of two public schools in Balch Springs, along with Wellesley Elementary School. The other school is Stonington Middle School which serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade (K-8). According to the 2010 US Census, almost all residents of Balch Springs are white (92%), while just 1% are black or African American. Hispanic residents make up 2% of the population, and Asian residents make up 0.2%. The community had a population of 5,512 as of 2000 census According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Balch Springs has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa). As such, it experiences significant annual rainfall throughout most of the year although some months see less than . In the early 21st century, Balch Springs is home to a number of businesses and organizations associated with its history including the Texas Historical Commission's Museum ofTexas Culture & History; the Joe Frazier Baseball Museum; and Old Main High School (now called Bowie High School). In addition to its cultural significance, Balch Springs has been historically important for its role in American military activity during World War II - most notably as the location where General George Custer died after being shot by Native Americans at Battle Creek on July 6th,1876.
