Azle is a town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Webb County. The first settlers in Azle were James and Anna Caldwell. Anna Caldwell's husband, John Caldwell, had come from Kentucky with his family in 1827. The first school was built in 1829 by Rev. Jno. Hoggon and Mrs. Elizabeth Atherton as "The Indian School". In 1830-31, public school instruction began at the home of Judge Wm. Hoggon on High Street and continued there until it moved to its present site on Main Street in 1840 when azle became an incorporated town under state law In 1861, part of what is now Webb County was donated by Colonel Edward Epps to become Grant County because he saw that the county could not be supported without cotton production In 1865, parts of Grant and Potter counties were combined to form Hudspeth County In 1870-71 Gilmore County was formed from a portion of Hudspeth County In 1872-73 Azle received land from Baylor University for $2 per acre which included much of what is now downtown Azle
