The history of Azle goes back to 1852 when it was named for General Sam Houston. The first settler in what would become Azle was James Murtagh and his family who arrived from County Mayo in Ireland in 1853. They established a post office and store on the edge of their land which they called "Murtagh's Mills". The name changed to "Azle" about 1870-1872 when John A.azle, an American Civil War Veteran settled there with his family. In 1907, azle had its first schoolhouse and by 1920 had 10 schools providing education for children ranging in ages from 3rd to 12th grades In 1925 azle had its first hospital with three rooms and by 1930 it boasted 5 hospitals staffed by Nurses aide and Physicians assistants while also having a jail & Post Office In 1951 azle got its current name - Coleman County - after then Governor Anson Coleman who donated 2 million acres (8 km²)of land to this small community east of Arlington Heights TX By 1990 the population of Cochran Field had dwindled to just 375 residents as oil exploration began making Azle increasingly dependent on mailing ballots instead of physical visits However Community spirit still alive as many people have volunteered their time or money to help rebuild old churches, businesses and homes following recent storms such as Harvey After prohibition ended in 1933 AZLE became one of the most important transportation hubs for smuggling alcohol into Texas during Prohibition . Many smugglers used Azle as both a stopover point en route to Mexico City where they could purchase liquor licenses or export it further down south before being taxed After repeal AZLE saw increased development including numerous new housing units along with restaurants, bars & nightclubs catering to both locals and tourists alike ; however , even with these growth opportunities crime rates remain high due largely to lack of law enforcement resources coupled with an active drug trade that has grown considerably since prohibition ended

Azle founded Azle on December 13, 1879, with 12 residents. The town originally consisted of just two buildings - a blacksmith shop and a store - and received its first post office from Austin on January 1, 1880. The original school building still stands as part of the current school district administration building in azle. The brick structure served as the schoolhouse until it was replaced by a new one in 1957-58 due to lack of funds. After years of growth and development within Azle limits only one other community developed until 1984 when Pecos (population 2200) reached out to Starr County commissioners asking for assistance with developing their own town boundaries that would ensure they could remain contiguous with their larger neighbor without having to surrender any land orgrades from either community - something that had never happened before between the two towns despite sharing an identical name and history). After much deliberation both communities voted not to annex into Pecos but instead continue as separate villages under different governance structures for several more years until 1994 when Pecos annexed into azle again becoming its second largest municipality after Garland (population over 10K).
