Fenton bought land east of town on the Brazos River for $500 and began to build a cotton gin, distillery, and school. In 1881 he sold his land to Lighthouse Point Coal Company for $7000. The first post office at Azle was established in 1881. In 1903 the town had a population of 200 people. In 1951 Azle became an independent city with its own government and police department.
