In 1876, Elihu Towne purchased land east of present-day Azle from Stephen Fenton for $2,000 cash plus five dollars per acre ($10 per square mile). This land became known as "theTownship". The Towne family developed it into a small city with over 100 homes before it merged with Arlington in 1907 to become Arlington Heights. In 1912 Revkin Boulevard was designated as US 83 Business Loop (later I-35E Business Loop). In 1935 State Highway 121 (SH 121) was designated along its current routing between Fort Worth and Midland; SH 121 concurrent routed with US 183 through present day azle until North Central Expressway realigned SH 131 just south of town limits in 1958 when US 183 became available again within city limits following completion of Interstate 35E bypassing azle entirely
