Azle is a small town in the Texas Panhandle, located about 25 miles east of Amarillo and 10 miles west of Lubbock. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,812. The name Azle comes from the Apache word azél which means "the place where the water is cold." The first settler in what is now Azle was Isaac Truesdell. He arrived in 1872 and named his farm after General Zachary Taylor's son, also named Isaac Truesdell. In 1907, John Hargrave bought land in what is now Azle from Truesdell and donated it to the town. The post office was established in 1909 and remained open until 1953. In 1915, when World War I began, Azle enlisted its citizens in the military to help fight on various fronts around America. More than 1,500 local men were drafted into service and served throughout Europe and World War I. Some returned home with medals but many never did see their families again after enlisting. After World War I ended, many people moved out of Azle because they found new opportunities elsewhere in Texas or Oklahoma. However, a few people decided to stay and make their mark on the community through business ventures or politics. One such person was George Washingburn who served as mayor from 1951 to 1959 and state senator from 1959 to 1966; he also founded Washingburn University (now Baylor University). Azle is a town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,970 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Azle were fur traders from Canada in 1821. They prospected for minerals and land near the San Antonio River which they named "New Mexico." In 1823, Mexican General Santa Anna sent an expedition against Ulysses S. Grant's American forces at Palo Alto Hill and Churubusco Creek in present day Williamson County. The Mexican army was routed and Santa Anna was captured. As a result of this event,Azle became part of the Republic of Mexico until 1861 when it reverted to Texas because most of Mexico had become a US territory by that time. In 1846, following the Mexican War, US troops burned down much of downtown Azle after routing the Mexican army under Colonel James Fenton; however no one was killed or injured as a result of this attack on Azle's civic center – an event still commemorated by local residents as Proposition 83 (1848). Nevertheless, Fort Hoodsan act passed in Congress propelling President Polk to send Confederate forces intoTexas during the Civil War; however no physical damage took place within Azle as many civilians had evacuated prior to hostilities breaking out due to fear for their safety should there be any fighting or civil unrest ensuing from southern sympathizers occupying northcentral Texas towns such as Amarillo, Midland and El Paso throughout late 1863-early 1865 meanwhile Union soldiers looted stores and homes throughout much of central Texas includingAzle which continued its neutrality until April 1865 when it formally seceded from Austin due to perceived lack thereof support for war efforts involving what amounted thenRoughly 60% Hispanic Texans with only 10% white non-Hispanic residents
The first European settlement in what is now Azle, Texas was made by the Spanish in 1795. It was called San Felipe de Azle. The town was named after St. Philip of Spain, who founded it in 1795. The first school in the area was started in 1819 and the first church was built in 1827.
