Azle, Texas is a town in and the county seat of Coleman County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Azle were farmers who arrived from Kentucky in 1849. They named their community after General James A.Azle, an American Revolutionary War general and lieutenant colonel who was captured by British forces near Salinas on October 10, 1780. The town began to grow when a railroad was built through Coleman County in 1872 and freight traffic increased. By 1904 the population had reached 2,000 people and Azle becoming one of the largest towns in Coleman County. In 1925 azle annexed two neighboring towns: Porterville and Tomball Heights. These annexations removed most of the agricultural land that had been used for farming since before Azle's inception as a town. However, some acreage remained used for cattle ranching until after World War II when it was converted into housing developments known as "The Ranch". During the late 1990s there was significant growth in commercial activity due to new highways being built east-west through Coleman County including I-10 and I-635 which bypassed much of downtown Azle but also created new business districts around Interstate 20/I-635 intersections such as North Valley Drive/Highway 377 (now called Manor Road) and South Valley Drive/Highway 377 (now called East Main Street). As a result of this development many businesses closed down or relocated withinAzle throughout 1999-2002 creating an economic vacuum that saw crime rates increase significantly during this time period despite efforts by police officers to fight crime with law enforcement only making up for about 60% of available resources instead focusing on gangs which accounted for most violent crimes reported to police during this timeframe However following several years of improved city planning efforts spearheaded by Mayor Art Acevedo including Measure T - which funded a variety of city services such as streetlights and new parks -azle has seen steady growth over recent years culminating with its current 1,811 residents according to the 2010 census

The community began as a small farmstead on the east side of I-10 near present day Azle High School. In 1887, A.J. Barnes and his brother Isaac founded what would become Azle post office near what is now US 79/I-10 about 5 miles (8 km) north of the original farmstead site. The first school in Azle was built in 1889 by Mrs. Jane Hildebrandt and named after her late husband Major General John Hildebrandt who fought with Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War and later served as governor of Alabama In 1902, azle citizens James Coker and Jerald Ladd purchased an adjacent piece of land from developer George Prentice for $7,000 to build a sawmill which became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed in 1961 due to financial difficulties Azle's rich history begins with its founding when A J Barnes and Isaac set up shop on what is now US 79/I-10 about 5 miles North of original Farmstead Site
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded and named for Santa Anna's Mexican War victory over Mexico. The first governor of Texas was James Fenton and the first legislature was made up of both Texans and Native Americans. In 1840, Sam Houston became the provisional president of Texas after his election as an Independent candidate in the Mexican-American War. On January 6, 1845, Houston is elected to be the sixth president of the United States by a vote of 121 to 38. After being sworn in on January 10th, he ordered construction begun on what would become known as The Alamo in San Antonio. A month later on February 5th, Mexican Colonel Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna surrendered at The Alamo with a large escort including six cannons and thousands of men under his command. He was tried for treason but executed by firing squad instead
