In 1925, when newly created Doña Ana County was formed out of portions of three other counties, Azle became one of its first towns or villages. At that time it had just over 100 residents and did not have any public services such as mail service or schools. As do most rural communities during those early days, food procurement and cooking remained largely done within home kitchens until electric appliances were introduced into many homes in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Meanwhile, businesses began to appear along Old Hwy 183 - now US 287 - with two stores opening initially: A&P grocery store (originally operated by Grocery Outlet Company) and Mrs Capps' Furniture Store (operated by Carrie Capps). By 1936 there were six businesses operating within walking distance of each other in what is now calledAzle Square Shopping Center - including four restaurants/cafeterias/bars/homeschooling center combo stores plus five independent shops catering to various needs like art supplies for artists butchery services for farmers markets etc., all connected throughowntown central business district corridors running east-west along Old Hway 183 Industrial Boulevard then north-south on Elm Street before turning west onto Howell Road into residential areas like Pemberton Place Park & Residence Estates before rejoining Hwy 183 northeast towards downtown Dallas
