A natural gas well was drilled near Azle in 1901 and production began soon after. In 1927Texaco purchased a controlling interest in Texaco-Houston Pipeline Company and built a pipeline from Azle to Houston. By 1930, there were 11 oil wells active in the area; however, due to Depression-related factors production declined until World War II when it increased again due to wartime demand for fuel oil products (pipelines bring crude oil directly from fields). Today there are only five residential residences remaining on Main Street: three dating back to the early 1800s and two that were built around 1925 and 1930 respectively - all are currently used as churches or daycare centers. There are also several businesses open including three convenience stores/Grocery stores plus two restaurants: Hometown Buffet (which closed down in 2009) and Chili's eatery which reopened after being closed for a decade or so by then owner John Hudgens There is no school within reasonable driving distance but azle does have an excellent library with over 100 titles including many children's books as well as novels for adults
