A post office called Azle was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907.
The first settler in Azle was J.L. Huggins and his family who arrived on October 15, 1881 from Illinois via the Old Neches River route. They set up a cabin near what is now Red Rock Summit Boulevard and started to farm land which they later improved with their own hands using dynamite to blast out thorns from bushes to prevent rabbits from entering their fields during the winter months; this led them to be known as "The Hugginses". Others early settlers included Robert Denton (1882), John Waddell (1885), Cesar Chavez (1887), George Elam (1889), and William Larkin (1902).
It took about 40 years for Azle's growth as a small community that had a total population of only 100 residents before it attained its current size of 2,068 people as of 2010 census figures. In 1916 Azle became an incorporated municipality.US Census

In 1957 the city Limits were changed by act of state Legislature from Township Lines into full cities effective November 1st following passage of laws creating Amarillo-Texarkana metropolitan area and adding Azle thereto. By 1980 there were over 30% Hispanic owned businesses in town with more than $1B worth of goods sold annually .
Since then development has continued with large projects such as: Brazos Valley Hospital redevelopment project - opening in 2001, new high school - built in 2009(!) just south of downtown AZLE renamed Coyote Valley High School after beloved cattle rancher and philanthropist Harvey Coyote who donated $5 million towards its construction; newly constructed Walmart supercenter adjacent to Coyote Valley High School - opened on July 22nd2009; Intersection 16th Street & West Loop 820 northbound traffic will be diverted off TX 82 onto IH 10 for an upcoming mixed use project being developed by Pinnacle Development Group LLC located right next door to Walmart; also just southwest corner IH 10 & TX 375 Speedway Blvd 4WD Park currently under construction which will include complete AutoZone garage along with additional open space for recreational vehicle parking.
