Azle is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Azle were African Americans who came to the area in 1871 from Jackson and Meridian counties. They founded a town named after themselves, Azle, on the banks of the Arkansas River. A post office was established there in 1875, and by 1880 it had reached its present size with a population of 350 people. In 1907, azle incorporated as a city with a population of 3,000 people. At that time it was one of only two cities in Johnson County created through municipal incorporation; the other being Flower Mound. In 1912 azle annexed what is now Greenville Township; this annexation made azle also the third largest city in Johnson County. During World War II, Azle served as headquarters for military airfields in south-central Texas; these included Fort Worth Army Air Base and Hillbilly Airport north of Wichita Falls and Ft Worth Municipal Airport west of downtown Wichita Falls (later renamed Arlington Municipal Airport). The city lost many residents to military service during this time but still managed to maintain its ranking as one of America's most heavily populated cities during wartime due to its booming economy which grew significantly thanks to munitions production at nearby Armistead Air Force Base and Kerr-McGee Chemical Company plant east of Wichita Falls. Todayazle has an economy that leans more towards agriculture than manufacturing or services; however some aspects have continued to thrive such as its wide variety of retail businesses including large box stores like Walmart and Sears while also having smaller shops around town that offer unique items like Bibles or quilts

Azle is a small town in Dawson County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1881 by John T. Azle and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil and gas near its location in 1902. The population reached 5,000 by 1907. In 1915, Azle became the first municipality to be incorporated in Texas. The town's economy has been based on agriculture and ranching since the early 20th century. A large refinery was built at nearby Midland in the 1930s and during World War II, Azle was a major military center for the region due to its strategic location on the Llano River between Sherman and Midland counties. In recent years,Azle has become an arts community with several museums and galleries as well as a number of professional theaters. The city also hosts annual events such as its annual rodeo event or "Fiesta de Azle".
The Azle family first settled in the area in 1852. The town was named for General James A. Azle, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. The Azles continued to live here until 1957, when they moved to Irving, Texas.
