Azle, Texas is a town in Ector County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Bryan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Azle arrived in 1877. In 1903, azle was founded as an agricultural community by J.D. White and his family on land near present-day Azle High School. The town's name comes from a Comanche word meaning "the place where buffalo grazed." A large cotton gin was built in 1911 and became known as the "World's Largest Cotton Gin" because it processed more than two million pounds of cotton per month during its heyday. The gin burned down in 1942 but was rebuilt and reopened as a commercial center for the area; it closed again in 1985. In 1928, Azle had its first oil well drilled when Texaco leased land along US 90 to drill a field of wells for their new oil company subsidiaryTexaco Occidental Petroleum Company (TOPS). The oil fields that would later be called Midland were discovered nearby and started production during 1929; by 1933, there were over 100 wells operating in the area. With so much production coming from such small acreage, Azle experienced rapid growth: between 1930 and 1940, population increased by 50%, to 2,000 residents; jobs scarce enough that not everyone could move into the new housing until after World War II ended – some people continued to live there even after they left military service or moved to other towns within Ector County 4 years earlier! Population growth slowed thereafter as technology advanced and cheaper sources of energy became available (refineries began operations near Amarillo) but gradually resumed growth beginning around 2000 when annexation by Amarillo gave the community easier access to education and resources throughout central Texas

Hargrave store opened in 1865 on the corner of 10th Street and Elm Street. In 1870 George Wimer established the First National Bank & Trust Company here with $5,000 from Hargrave and other investors – one of the early successful business ventures in rural Texas. In 1886 William Fenton built a log cabin near present day US 287/20th street for himself and his family as their home until he sold it to John Bigham about 1909 for $1,500cash plus lumber which he had brought overland from Missouri some months earlier; this became what is now known as Fenton's Cabin Site (or "Fenton landing").
