Azle, Texas is a small town located in Williamson County, Texas on the right bank of the Shackelford River. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The name Azle comes from a Comanche word meaning "place where there is no water." The first post office in Azle was established in 1876. Today,Azle has one public school and three private schools. The history of ammunition began with musket balls that were fired from Native American cannons during the Battle of Red Oak Prairie on November 16, 1845. A company of Mexican soldiers under Captain Manuel Romero was defeated by General Sam Houston's army at this engagement when they ran out of munitions and ballast to fire their cannonballs. In 1847, Colonel James Waddell founded White Sands Ammunition Plant near present-day Midland City. This plant manufactured artillery projectiles such as shot, shell and powder for use by the U.S Army and navy. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Texas and besieged Galveston Island while Union forces supported by artillery bombardment destroyed Confederate positions on the mainland. On April 14th, 1862 Captain David Crain wrote in his journal: "I could see guns all around us...The whole island looks like an immense cotton field." less

A little more than a decade ago, Azle was only an agricultural town of 1,200 people. Today, it is the cultural and economic center of the region, with a thriving arts and music scene, as well as active volunteerism and entrepreneurship initiatives. But even in its heyday – when Azle was home to one of the largest cotton plantations in Texas – the community had a strong sense of community. The original Azle settlers were white men from northeast Georgia who arrived on horseback in 1836. For many years they farmed land around Mission Bend, which lies just outside of town today. As cotton became available along the Red River Valley in central Texas,Azle’s farmers began to abandon their land for new territory; by 1875 there were only 6 families remaining in the town. The first post office opened in 1876; at that time it was called simply “Azle.” The name change came about because azaleas (a type of flower) were common in the town square and residents wanted to be associated with something larger than themselves. In 1886, local physician Dr. John Witherspoon organized a group to build a school on what is now First Street; construction began that year and the building still stands today (it served as the local courthouse until 1974). In 1893, Azle built its first store – one of several such stores that would soon dot its landscape. Azle quickly became known for its cotton crops: during World War II it produced up to 90% of all Texas’ supply of munitions needed for war effort; afterwards it turned its attention tomarketing homegrown products like apples and flowers. However, while Cotton Town enjoyed stability through these years, other parts of downtown experienced rapid growth during this time period: between 1907 and 1912 construction started on what is now Main Street (then South Audley Street), which led directly toazle’s current commercial district. In 1925 azalea production reached an all-time high thanks to hybridization efforts conducted byDr., James Baughman; thereafter annual output declined but remained high enough so that azaleas continued being marketed domestically until 1975 when importation resumed following World War III shortages
