Austin, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Travis County. The city has a population of 613,711 as of 2019, making it the most populous municipality in Travis County. Austin is also the second most populous city in Texas after Dallas. Austin was founded on October 1, 1827, by Alamoan Captain James Hance and General Sam Houston as an independent settlement near present-day downtown Austin. The original town site was located at what is now Pedernales Creek near which businesses grew to take up space in what are today downtown streets and buildings such as the State Fairgrounds and later City Hall. On November 3, 1836, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attacked and destroyed Hance's outpost with cannons from his army along Pedernales Creek; this event became known as the Battle of Austin. In 1839–40, Stephen Folsom built a brick courthouse on Congress Avenue in what is now Midtown Austin for local defense against Mexican raiders. The courthouse served as the temporary capital of Texas until San Antonio took over that role on January 10, 1845. From 1840 to 1850, Austin was anchored by two cotton warehouses built by John Kirby (1786-1853) on Commerce Street north of Trinity Cathedral; these warehouses supplied cottonseed oil totexas millers during the 1830s boom period that followed European colonization of North America. After Kirby's death in 1853 his buildings were acquired by William Muehlenberg (1812-1892), who turned them into one of downtown Austin's first commercial districts; Muehlenberg renamed them "Kirby Alley". In 1865–66 Major General Alfred Pemberton made unsuccessful attempts to invade Mexico through Nacogdoches Parish; when Confederate MajorGeneral Braxton Bragg unexpectedly invaded Texarkana northeast of Austin onMarch 14–15th 1865 he used Nacogdoches Parish resources including artillery to drive Pemberton out southeastward past Manor Road into Mexican territory; this event became known as Bragg’s Campaign or "The inconclusive battle at Nacogdoches". Taking advantage of Spindletop coal mines operated by both sides under lease from Mexico since December 1860,[1][2] Texas Union forces won a decisive victory at Faber Field (July 15-21st 1862) over Confederate forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Taylor Sr.;[3][4][5][6] this event became known as The Texarkana Campaign or "The battles at Faber Field".[7] In 1870 annexation completed much western Travis County including parts east of Interstate 35W within new counties named Grayson and Williamson – annexed areas today include Brownwood (1901), Dripping Springs (1902), Oak Cliff (1903), Temple University Heights (1920)[8] - creating largest metropolitan area west of Chicago without its own political government until Phoenix surpassed it in population in 2016[9]. The exposition helped to stimulate economic development in Austin and make it an important center for commerce and culture in Texas. In 1984, UNESCO designated Austin as a World Heritage Site in recognition of its unique cultural heritage.
