The growth continued through annexation by Dallas County in 1901; however annexation didn't bring about significant development until 1907 when West Side Highway was completed linking downtown with west suburban neighborhoods eastward In spite all these challenges – combined with intermittent fires that frequently burned parts of town – Downtown Austin enjoyed strong economic growth throughout much of this era due to factors such as industry (beginning with cattle ranching), tourism (due largely to Mount Hood National Forest being nearby), new developments associated with World War II (particularly El Paso County’s production activity related plants) The postwar boom helped revive old downtown areas like San Pedro Street and Congress Avenue while creating new districts around Interstate 35: Highland Park northward along I-35W towards Lake Travis; Riverside Drive eastward from I-35W past Guadalupe Heights southward into annexed Amarillo; Slaughter Lane / Northwest Freeway northwest out towards Kyle Field just beyond Waco when it merged into I-35E near Fort Worth/Dallas proper The post-war decades have also seen continuing waves OF innovation starting right here on campus - think biotech startups rise up out Westheimer Ave., Midtown dives inlandBryan Expositions expands southeast indoors
