Gun targets have been a part of Austin’s history for over 150 years. The first target shooters in Austin were the Earp brothers, who shot at an animal during a hunting episode in 1881. Gun targets continued to be used sporadically until 1895, when James Bowie was killed by John Sharp while playing with his rifle on Elm Creek Trail. From then on, gun targets became an integral part of local shooting culture and were commonly used by both men and women. The early firearms industry in Austin was based largely around the production of shotguns and pistols. Shotguns were made from simple materials such as barbed wire and cotton, making them relatively easy to produce and fire. Pistol manufacturing began with revolvers but quickly evolved into the manufacture of rifles and shotguns. Rifle manufacturers included Texas Arms Company, Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and Remington Arms Company. Shotgun designers included William Fenton (the father of modern shotgun design), Hiram Maxim, John Moses Browning, George Stephenson (founder of British arms manufacturer Blackford & Sons), Edwin Baker (creator of the pump action shotgun), Harry Browne (founder of Brownells Guns), Jack Pickering (father-in-law to Sam Houston), JB Yeoman (owner/operator of Joe’s Gun Emporium), Alonzo Harper (founder/operator of Anheuser-Busch Brewery’s Budweiser distributorship in Austin) among others. The shot hit a tree near the shore and created an ongoing problem for American forces as they could not destroy theoak quickly enough. In 1861, Americans began to shoot guns at Confederate cannons located in Fort Sumter. This event is often considered the start of the Civil War. In 1892, Americans opened fire on London's Stock Exchange during a general strike by workers.

The city annexed portions of neighboring counties during various annexations over the years until it reached its current size with present boundaries on August 29th 1997.[3] Austin experienced significant growth following World War II due in part to military installations nearby including Travis Air Force Base (opened in 1941), Fort Hood (opened in 1947), Lake Travis (opened in 1949) and Lackland Air Force Base (leased in 1955).[4] During this time, Austin began to attract high-profile residents such as Ted Turner,[5][6][7][8] Jerry Lewis[9][10], Willie Nelson[11][12][13], Tom Cruise[14],[15], Bob Dylan,[16] Jack Kerouac,[17],[18],[19], Neil Armstrong[20], Jimmy Dean[21][/21]. Some famous landmarks that were built or erected during this time include UT Tower (the first open air structure designed specifically foromeric television use), State Capitol Building (dedicated on September 12th 1957)[22]), Nasher Hall – now known as Rice University – then South Congress Avenue – now Main Street – Hearn Auditorium – then Barker Hangar before becoming an incorporated city on December 15th 1971.[23])
