Among those attending were Seguín,[5][6], US Army Colonel Edward Eagan,[7] James Bowie,[8][9] Myron Clements[10], Drury Clarke McClellan,[11][12] Waco Morrow,[13][14], Robert Hoggarty[15],[16], John Sutter[17], George Richardson[18], William McCulloch[19],[20] and Sam Houston himself. A plaque recognizing these events still hangs in First Congregational Church.[21] In 1861 South Carolina seceded from the United States over slavery issues; this led to skirmishes between Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell and Union troops under General Sherman over control of Dallas/Ft Worth within months before Johnston's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 created an era known as Reconstruction Texas when many former slaves fled or were allowed to return home while their owners remained incarcerated or out Ofreachable due to harsh laws passed during Reconstruction period such as Jim Crow Laws which discriminated against African Americans
