Early guns used smooth bore barrels, which allowed for faster movement of projectiles downrange and better accuracy when firing due to less resistance against variation in air pressure inside the barrel. These types of barrels eventually became known as breech loading Guns because they required a breech threat (action) unit (usually an arm or hand) in order to fire rounds from the barrel
