By 1835, enough people had congregated around Austin to form a town government under the leadership OF George Henson[5]: In 1835 George Henson organized an agricultural society at Austin to improve living conditions for settlers living along Travis Creek just south of today's Congress Avenue intersection...Henson purchased land east side [of today's Slaughter Lane], southwest corner [of today's New Britain Street], east side corner [of today's First Street], northwest corner [of today’s Third Street]; he named this tract “Downtown” because it was then considered part Of Houston... Map dated Jan 9th 1830…Henson proclaimed: I have erected these 10 blocks Southwesterly from Congress Ave & EAST FROM THE RIVER TRINITY – This will be called Downtown because heretofore all our Settlers havelived & Business done Here
