Athletic fans from Athens, Texas will always remember the 1977 season when the school's football team made it to the state championship game. The Titans played their opponents in Dallas, but ended up losing 31-7. However, this was only the beginning of a successful history for Athens Football. In 1980, they made it to the state playoffs and lost to Garland County. However, in 1984 they again advanced to the playoffs and beat Garland County 38-3 before being ousted by Wichita Falls in the semi-finals. That same year, Athens Football also earned their first ever conference title with a 9-0 record. With that accomplishment they qualified for play in the Southwest Conference (SWC). They finished 5-4 in that season and were able to make it all the way to their first SWC Championship game where they faced off against Abilene Christian. Unfortunately for Athens Football, they lost 36-14 on homecoming night. The following year saw yet another conference title as Athens finished 8-1 and qualified for participation in what would become known as Division III of The American Athletic Conference (AAC). They had high hopes going into this season as well; however things didn't go according to plan as they managed just two wins out of their first 10 games before suffering an upset at home against mini powerhouse Temple University 22–10. This setback led head coach Rick Stroudto ask for his release after compiling a 3–9 record over three seasons with his team. Coach Stroudto moved on to Tulsa who would go on win back-to-back division titles (1986 and 1987) while also reaching bowl games twice during that time frame including one hosting Super Bowl XXVII which helped Athenians regain some pride nationally after years of letdown performance at sports venues across America (e.g., Cotton Bowl Stadium). Finally Led by new coach Art Davis who reached back into his roots coaching under Rick Stroudto at Tulsa prior thereto, Athena reached its third consecutive SWC Championship game defeating Memphis 41–7 on January 6th 1978 playing host once again in front of a sold out crowd at Memorial Stadium becoming only the second school ever (the other being SMU) ever to do so dating back more than 50 years! This success pushed Athens into Third Place behind UTEP & Houston Baptist right behind Rice University sandwiched between them earning automatic berth into The NCAA Playoffs where finally they met Oklahoma State Cowboys 49–7 winners over Miami of Florida which is still considered oneofthe greatest upsets ever seen!
