Athens, Texas is a small town located in Llano County, Texas. Athens was founded in 1881 by John Couch and his family. The town became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1994. As of the 2010 census, the population of Athens was 2,362. The name "Athens" comes from the ancient city of Athens in Greece. The first settlers to Athens were John Couch and his wife Sarah. They moved from Illinois to Llano County in 1881 to start a new life. In 1882 they had two children: John Couch Jr., who would become an insurance salesman and mayor of Athens, and Sarah Couch, who would become an opera singer. The couple also started a grocery store and built a home on Goose Creek Road near present day University Boulevard and Houston Street. They later moved their store to what is now known as First Baptist Church on Elm Street near Houston Street. In 1912 the citizens of Athens voted to create their own CDP which would include all of Llano County except for portions east of I-10 which were annexed into Dallas/Fort Worth.[1] On January 1,1994, the CDP was created with its current boundaries.[2] The name "Athenes" comes from Greek mythology because at that time it was thought that Athena (a goddess) lived in what is now llano county[3]. The popular song "A Thousand Miles" by Hank Williams may have been inspired by this legend or another story about Athena's visit to llano county years earlier during World War II when she gave US soldiers food for free while they were stationed there[4]. Today many people still believe that Athenians are descendants of those early settlers[5].
