After years of hard work and determination by their brethren in Athens, they established a cotton gin and distillery on what is now Centre Street. In 1873, Athens became the county seat for Hardin County when Post Office Hill was built at the junction of two ranches that had been part of Austin Township since before Indian Removal began in 1830. The growth of Athens took hold quickly after it was selected as the site for an important railroad crossing over the Arkansas River which would connect Dallas with Houston. During World War II, many local farmers joined forces with other farmers throughout Southeast Texas to produce food for soldiers across America; this partnership led to increased business for businesses like Armour & Co., JBL Rubber Company and Bechtel Corporation during wartime times when available land conflicted with military production quotas。 Many residents also actively participated in local political processes through voting or serving on boards from 1922 until their departure following a fire that destroyed much property including several churches and homes around 1935. Roosevelt's New Deal programs – including both relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina and establishment of an official government cultural center (the current headquarters for the Dallas Museum). However, due largely to WWII military industrialization that destroyed many local communities across Texas – including Athens – growth slowed throughout the 1950s and 1960s until finally reaching a modest level during the 1970s when demographics slowly shifted back towards agriculture again. However this recent resurgence has been halted by factors such as population growth rates being higher than those needed for sustainable economic development; low tax bases resulting from tight regulation from state governments; rising housing prices; or alternatively competition from neighbouring cities that have experienced larger population increases but better infrastructure development opportunities (e.g., Dallas/Houston).
In 1846, Athens was founded by James K. Polk as the capital of the Texas Republic. In 1849, it became the capital of the United States of America when Mexico seceded from Mexico and gained independence. The city's growth continued until it reached its peak in 1920 with a population of over 120,000 people. However, during World War II, Athens experienced significant destruction and loss due to bombings and military activities.
