As result of these challenges, development within Athens is slowly but surely picking up again- although not yet back to its pre-recession level of prosperity.
The city of Athens, Texas was founded in 1859 by John M. Griffin and his wife Anna. The town grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s, with a population of around 100 residents. In 1881, Athens became a county seat and continued to grow rapidly. By 1920, the population had grown to over 1,000 people and Athens became the third largest city in Texas. The city experienced significant growth during World War II, with its population reaching over 300 residents by 1945. After the war, Athens experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Dallas-Fort Worth. However, during the 1980s and 1990s, Athenians began to Experience significant economic stagnation due to declines in manufacturing jobs in the area. In 2003, Athens merged with neighboring Fort Worth to form the newTXAnaxia CountyTwin Cities region which has since been experiencing substantial economic growth despite this trend
