The Athens, Texas history begins in 1836 when the United States acquired what is nowTX under the Treaty of Gadsden. The area was part of Mexico and was purchased by the United States as part of that purchase. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, American general Tyler’s expedition reached TX and found a large group of Mexicans living in what is now Athens. The Texans were not happy with this development and decided to take action. They gathered a force and marched into Mexican territory to drive out the Mexicans. This successful campaign led to the annexation of TX by the US. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Athens was one of five towns in Austin County that sided with Confederate General Robert E Lee over Union General Ulysses S Grant. After several months of fighting, on April 12th Athens surrendered to Confederate forces under Major-General Joseph E Wellman without battle. The town quickly emptied after this event and most residents relocated to other parts of TX or left for good. After the war ended, many businesses were established in Athens due to its strategic location between Austin and San Antonio on two major highways (the Neches River forms much of Athenas border). Many prominent Texans such as Sam Houston and Thomas Jefferson also lived here during their careers or later moved back into town once they achieved national prominence. In 1948, when Texas became an independent country, Athens became its capital city; however it retains its roots as a small community located on an agricultural plain near San Angelo across from downtown Austin
In 1821, Athens was founded by James Bowie. The town grew rapidly and in 1851 it became the capital of Texas. In 1872, Athens was burned to the ground by a group of Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War.
