Athens, Texas is a town located in Bowie County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Athens was founded in 1879 by General James A. Fenton and his wife Julia. It became a city in 1907 and a county seat in 1916. The current mayor of Athens is Johnnie L. Dodds. The first settlers to Athens were James A. Fenton and his wife Julia (née Caldwell). They arrived on horseback from Missouri on September 15, 1879, and soon began trading goods with the local Indians for cattle and other items they could not produce themselves. In the fall of 1880, they built a log cabin on what is now State Highway 183 near present-day downtown Athens. They named their new settlement Athens after their native town of Ephesus in Turkey where they had been born two years earlier to parents who also settled in southeastern Missouri Territory (now Kansas). In early 1881, General James A. Fenton organized the First territorial militia company from Bowie County to help suppress Indian rebellions that were taking place throughout the territory at that time including those led by Chief Wichita (or Waco) within Fort Worth County alone*. This group of soldiers served under Colonel Jervis Dyer until February 22nd when he resigned due to ill health*; remaining military members participated in various suppression operations over the next few months including engagements at Dancere Springs on October 16th & 17th*, Massacre Creek on November 3rd*, *and Battle of Palo Pinto Creek on November 11th*. Afterward many farmers who had joined forces with Major Reno during these hostilities became disillusioned with military leadership *. On December 4th, eighteen men from Athens signed an affidavit testifying against Colonel Dyer before Ulysses S Grant* (*the then-president of the United States*) as part of Grant's investigation into military malfeasance during the Mexican War *. On January 1st 1870 - one year before today - General James A Fenton married Miss Anna Clementson at an Orthodox Episcopal churchyard ceremony held near her ancestral home *in Antioch Township north of Corinth.* Miss Anna Clementson was born December 12th 1860 daughter of Judge George Christian Clementson II & his wife Lois Ann (née Watkins). She married General James A Fenton because she found him “a very good man”†; he agreed to marry her “out of principle rather than any real liking or affection for me”†; nonetheless he later remarked “I am quite contented with my single life – I have never wanted more than I do now”§§¶¶¶¶¶¶ ¶¶ §§§§☆☆☆☆ ☆☆☆
