In 1836, General Sam Houston decided to move his army away from Mexico City due to concerns about its potential threats to American interests there. He ordered some men to build a farmstead on what is now Slaughter Road east of San Antonio and began calling it Santa Fé de Bourgogne because he thought it would be less likely for Mexican troops to find them there than anywhere else in Texas. On December 20, 1836, when Texans voted on whether they should secede from Mexico or not – which they did – Santa Fé de Bourgogne became an independent republic under the name Republic ofTexas
