The population was 753,610 as of the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous municipality in Texas after Dallas. It is home to both The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and George Mason University. The first people who lived in what is now Arlington were Native Americans who built and occupied present day Arlington Heights before European contact. In 1836, James Kenedy founded White Settlement near modern day Arlington Village on land that he had acquired from the Creek Nation ceded byTexas tothe United States as part of the Treaty of Gadsden. The settlement failed due to lack of food and water resources, but kennedy was able to get additional settlers moving into his colony by selling land east of Trinity River for cattle grazing and farming ventures which became known as Red Water Country. By 1860, most residents had left for other settlements around Austin or San Antonio because there was no easy access to water or food sources south of Austin from where goods could be shipped upriver via waterways such as the Sam Houston Toll Road. In 1872, Father Edward¹s Catholic church (later called Our Lady's) was founded in what is now Ballston Glen with funds donated by Josiah Gregg and others including John Fenton Custis III., grandson of then-President Washington Custis II., on behalf of Episcopal Bishop Samuel Latham Goode III.. Father Edward served as pastor until his death in 1922 while also working on construction projects associated with Holy Cross Cemetery west of Ballston Glen; St Ignatius' Church just north Of Ballston Glen; Christmastime Eve services at Manor House west side Of Ballston Glen; dedication ceremonies for new Parenting Centers located at Oak Cliff Elementary School & Parkland Middle School northeast corner Of Elmhurst Avenue & Parish Rd.; and erection/constructionof large number (up to 100+) white clapboard churches including Christ Lutheran Church -Ballston Glen Center see photo opposite page The first students at UTA came through Father Edward's school starting in 1916 when 22 freshmen were admitted from various surrounding schools according to Arthur Ashe: " Almost every high school graduate from those days went on to college."
