Grant issued an order disbanding all Confederate forces throughout South Carolina except for such elements as Generals Johnston and Beauregard who should continue to resist until relieved by Union troops under General Sherman; these men were moved north into Pennsylvania behind Sherman's lines at Fort Donelson; therefore, there are no Confederate veterans living in Arlington today although some may reside elsewhere within Virginia or Maryland since those states do not have similar laws against military retirement benefits being given to Confederates living there post-war.
