The original town site included only a few scattered homes and businesses along Elm Street near present-day downtown Austin; today's neighborhood includes much more than those initial holdings. In 1872, due to increasing population growth in Travis County (then just 8 miles wide), commissioners decided to move the county seat from Austin to Arlington so that more people could be served by one location. On November 3, 1872, a committee chaired by Jno Ewell Callahan recommended that commissioners vote on moving the county seat from Austin to Arlington based on three considerations: proximity to schools, pressing needs for land south of I-10 and east of US Highway 453 (now US 183), which ran through what is now downtown Dallas; local objections to annexing what were then rural areas such as South Oak Cliff; and fears that annexation would lead to increased taxes without corresponding benefits for residents or businesses within the new municipality limits (i.e., outside of DowntownDallas). After much debate over whether or not to move ahead with an annexation proposal—which ultimately failed—the commission voted 5–1 on November 17th (#1 being Callahan) to add Arlington into Travis County.[2][3] On December 12th 1870 – less than two months after becoming a part of Travis County – Mayor John Witherspoon dedicated cornerstone at First Baptist Church #4 & Main St., formerly known as "The Brick House" because it housed most city services until 1959 when they moved into new facilities at 301 Main Street[4], marking one significant step towards solidifying ties between Arlingtons residents/businesses/government entities since its incorporation into our community many decades later![5]
The area now known as Arlington was established by the Texas Rangers in 1845. The first house on the site was erected by Captain James Fenton in 1846. By 1850, Arlington had grown to include a small town and a number of businesses. In 1865, the first school in Arlington opened; it was part of a larger system of schools that were built throughout Texas at this time. In 1892, Arlington became an independent municipality. The following year, Arlington hosted its first annual parade; the event is still held each year to commemorate American independence and history.
