The first known permanent settler in Arlington was James Robertson (1775–1827), a Scottish Highlander who came overland from Scotland in search of land to farm near what is now Irvington Avenue and Springdale Road. He founded a small town called Clarksville along I-10 just beyond today's Manor Road/Route 66 intersection (now part of Beltway 8). A few years later he moved his family to what are now Old Town Alexandriaand started building homes there which still stand today including Arlston House (pictured). After Robertson's death some local farmers decided to rename their villages - most notably Pottsboro due to cattle rustling activities within its boundaries - so there were many references throughout the 1800s to various Arlington settlements including Pottsboro Park outside Rosslyn today where President George Washingtonirmed his papers during his stay at Valley Forge military camp circa 1780
