Arlington, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Hudspeth County. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area, bordered by Denton to the east and west and Austin to the north-northwest. The oldest continually inhabited area in Arlington dates back to 1736 when French colonists established Fort Troup on Red River Township's bank near what is now Arlington Heights. In 1837, Anglo-American settlers from Kentucky founded a trading post at what is now Midtown Arlington. By 1845, all British colonies had been dissolved and Arlington became part of the United States as a result of the Mexican War; it remained an American territory until it was annexed by Texas in 1901. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early made his last stand outside Union lines near present day Rosslyn before being captured and executed at Chancellorsville Court House; this event helped spur Congress to pass legislation authorizing annexation of Dallas into Texas as part of that war effort. As part of Texan Reconstruction after Reconstruction ended in America's south following World War II, Arlington became one of many black towns throughout southern Dallas/Fort Worth area which were places that white flight brought about due to discrimination then rampant during Reconstruction era within both American society as well as African Americans themselves still experiencing Jim Crow Laws where people could only be treated "humanely" if they were white or their family members were white (and most African Americans were). In 1951 Arlington became one of first cities in Texas to have its own school district - White Settlement School District #1 - with students coming from all over eastern Travis County including Spring Branch (now Minute Maid Park), Flower Mound (former IHOP restaurant), Mesquite (former Baylor University Hospital), Rockwall (Former Ford dealership etc.) The school district closed in 1978 but property remains extant off FM 1960 just southwest of Loop 820 eastbound off IHOP Boulevard today known locally as "Jenny's Ranch" because then-Mayor Bill Cody donated land for development there for Jenny Craig International restaurant chain which opened there in 1984). That same year also saw incorporation of nearby Slaughter Creek Independent School District #2 into Arlington Municipal Schools effective January 1st 1961; Slaughter Creek ISD continued operations until May 15th 2017 when it was combined with neighboring Tyler ISD creating Tyler Consolidated Independent School District #3 effective September 25th 2017 which consolidated all three schools' operations under one roof making Austin’s largest school district since 2008! After much lobbying from local officials such as Mayor David Wade along with private donations from individuals like cattle rancher Jerry Lee Lewis who gave $100K towards construction & renovation efforts on several new schools built inside City Limits including Houston High School & South Side Elementary School currently used by Houston Dynamo soccer team - those two districts merged on February 14th 2018 becoming simply called "Arlington Heights". On July 22nd 2020 City Limits voters passed Proposition 3 annexing Slaughter Creek DISD along with parts of neighboring Willacy Valley Jr./Sr., Mount Pleasant Jr./Sr., Coppell Sr./Jr., Treaty Oak Jr./Sr., Friendswood Sr./Jr., Haltom City Jr./Sr., Bowie Bayou authorized annexation into Texarkana Municipal Airport Authority effective October 15th 2020 making Arlington Heights an airport authority city!
The town of Arlington was founded in 1836 by Captain John F. Smith and his wife, Mary Ann. The original site of the town was on the banks of the Trinity River, about two miles south of present-day Arlington Heights. The name "Arlington" is thought to come from a grant given by James K. Polk to Nicholas de Montresor in 1839. In 1848, Arlington became an independent city and was renamed honorifically for George Washington, who had died less than a year earlier. In 1861, Arlington Heights was annexed into Arlington and became part of the new city government. On November 3, 1888, the city voters passed a resolution annexing sections of Haverford Road (now Prairie View Avenue) east of Interstate 10 to make it an arterial roadway within the city limits; this annexation completed what had been a long-term plan by Mayor John Waddell to improve transportation links between downtown and suburban areas around thecity center. On December 20th 1946 (the day after World War II ended), Arlington City Council voted 5-2 to recognize January 1st as National Museum Day in honor of all those who have contributed thereto - including many American soldiers killed or injured during World War II. That same year also saw the inauguration ceremony for Mayor Harry Hughes as first African American mayor in Texas history when he took office at 12:01am on January 1st 1947
