The area was explored by Spanish missionaries in 1763 and claimed for Spain by Antonio López de Balboa in 1799. In 1836, General Santa Anna's forces drove out the Mexican forces that had occupied Austin and arrived in Fort Worth. He named the new settlement for George Washington, who had been Commander-in-Chief of United States forces at the Battle of San Jacinto two years earlier. On February 6, 1836, Arlington incorporated as a municipality with a population of about 100 people under its jurisdiction; it would grow to become one of America's most populous cities with over 200,000 residents by 1870). In 1907 Arlington became part of Dallas County when Dallas annexed all but 1/3rd of Tarrant County intoDallas County; much has changed since then including annexation into other counties (most recently Denton) or incorporation within other municipalities (such as Farmers Branch). The City's growing suburbanization has resulted in increased traffic congestion on I-10 W near downtown which began to be addressed with construction of Expressway A around 1990s while also increasing funding for public transportation options such as light rail transit (LRT) and bus rapid transit (BART). The original plan called for an expressway through downtown which never materialized due to opposition from local citizens who felt that additional development would take away their businesses and jobs; instead arterial road construction began around 1990s primarily serving eastern neighborhoods outside downtown which continue to this day despite heavy traffic gridlock during rush hours on I-10W near downtown

The first permanent settler in what is now Arlington was Nicholas Eppes, who purchased land near present-day Arlington Cemetery on May 14, 1836 from George Rogers Clark for $5 per acre. In 1865, John Quincy Adams III donated land east of Interstate 10 for incorporation into a new city called "Arlington". On November 3rd that year, Arlingtons first election took place under Confederate rule due toTexas's secession from the United States; all citizens were required to take slave oaths before voting due to fears that black Americans would be disenfranchised if they were allowed into the new city limits. Afterward, Union sympathizers began moving into Arlingtonsville while those living west of I-10 kept their homes and Vote Arlingtonsville until it merged with neighboring Bowie on January 1st 1898 becoming Bowie-Arlington Heights annexed by Arlington making fullResidentship annexation possible without any vote or referendum being taken which then set off numerous name changes throughout history including: Bowie/Amberlee Heights (1899), Archertown (1901), Ardrossan (1902), Old Town Bowie/Amberlee Heights (1903), finally Arlington Heights residents using their newly acquired City rights on July 20th 1949 creating today’s downtown area known simply as "Downtown"
