During World War II many Arlington residents enlisted in service; several post offices were closed due to lack of personnel but most families continued using their homes until they could join up or go into exile abroad when war ended without victory for either side. One notable resident who fought in World War II was James Forrestal who became United States Secretary of Defense after becoming president Franklin D Roosevelt's Vice Presidential candidate during 1944 election season(). Afterward Forrestal decided not run for office again but kept some assets inside his presidential mansion including furniture from his old White House Cabinet Office whereupon federal law required him disclose this information also known as "The Forrestal Doctrine". A large number of civilians were killed or injured when two bombs exploded near Pentagon on November 15th 1963 – just days prior to then-President John F Kennedy assassination – causing extensive damage across suburban neighborhoods around Washington D .C . On December 5th 1968 less than a week after assassin Lee Harvey Oswald had shot President John F Kennedy two days earlier killing him outside US embassy complex following failed robbery attempt four blocks away at Dealey Plaza resulting in six fatalities ─ Arlington Heights experienced one of America’s largest riots ever with over 400 people arrested ─ This event came about because white supremacists angry over inaccurate news reports leading up thereto arrose against integrationists ─ Peaceful protest march led by 10 year old girl boycotting segregated amusement park resulted ultimately in reopening Kleberg arcade weeks later
