Angleton, Texas is a small town in Hill County, Texas on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,749 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio-Houston metropolitan area. The community started as a farming village in 1881 and became an oilfield town in 1907 when a well was drilled there. Angleton's position on the river allowed it to become one of the most important Hubsand Refineries in North America during World War II. The refinery closed in 1966 but reopened as an industrial park in 1984 with production continuing until 1999. Angleton has been home to many businesses over the years including JBS Wholesale Corporation which operates a large meatpacking plant and other related facilities, ChevronTexaco which operated an oil refiner from 1949 until its sale to TexacoPhillips in 2002, and Rubicon Films which made several films here before moving to Austin TX after those films were shot. Today, Angleton still contains some of its agricultural roots with local farmers taking advantage of their unique soil and climate conditions. More recently, however, Angleton has become known for its scopes shopping community - specifically for telescopes - due to its strong ties with several major telescope manufacturers (including OAO Alaksandr Burakovskyi Observatory) and relative ease of access to quality optics thanks to its location on I-10 just east of downtown San Antonio.

As Cameron County entered into decline in the late 19th century due to increasing population density combined with natural resources depletion (the county lost over 50% of its acreage to farming between 1870 and 1930), certain residents withdrew their support for public education in favor of private schools; this resulted in significant decline in property values among these more rural residents who were unable or unwilling to invest in new construction or infrastructure necessary for cultural survival during what must have seemed like a golden age for American agriculture productivity while nearly all other aspects of society stagnated or declined (Goudreau 1978). Angleton was founded in 1848 as a trading post on the Trinity River by General Sam Houston. The town grew rapidly and by 1872 it had a population of 5,000. It became an important stop on the Texas Railroad network and soon became known for its produce, cattle, and cotton plantations.
