The first settler in what is now Angleton was Fayette Dixon in 1837. A post office called Angleton was established in 1841, and remained in operation until 1903. The community name originated from General Antonio Garza's march to retake Texas from Mexican forces during the Texan Revolution of 1835-1836. Angleton has been identified with Abe Lincoln and other American leaders who visited or lived there during their careers or before they were elected president or held office (e.g., James Kyd Anderson). In 1938, surveyor Harry Clements named a stream flowing through Angleton after his friend and long time associate Rufus Wainwright (the namesake for Wainwright Creek), director of National Park Service headquarters at Yellowstone National Park on the Great Plains near Denver, Colorado. In 1941 Wainwright donated land to make way for an Army airfield which would become Fort Worth Air Force Base (now Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport). The base became home to more than 50 military units and installations before it closed its doors in 1994 due to sequestration budget cuts that were then made permanent by President Bill Clinton’s executive order 92-521.; After years of discussion between city officials, developers and private interests about what should be done about Fort Worth AFB site - which sat vacant for over a decade - city council finally approved annexation by Angleton on February 5th, 2009 when it voted 14-1 to annex parcels totaling 208 acres from neighboring Arlington Heights; According to some estimates only 2 percent of all annexation requests are granted because no property lines match up with municipal boundaries
