The village of Angleton was founded by Europeans in 1855 as a railroad stop on the Houston and Galveston Railroad. The first post office opened in 1857, and the name was changed to Angleton in 1871 when the railroad line crossed over into Will County from Harris County. In 1902, Angleton became an independent municipality with a government its own school board and library system. In 1959, it combined with neighbouring Cedar Hill to form what is now known as the " merger ". Angleton's early history is intertwined with that of nearby Cedar Hill. Both towns were founded by European settlers following construction of railways through central Texas during the 1850s. At first only small settlements existed within present-day Angleton and Cedar Hill; however, by 1860 both had grown sizable enough for their own governments (Angleton had a mayor and council while Cedar Hill did not). As railroads grew more important in Texans' lives during this time period, new towns sprang up around them – including Angleton – as railway companies developed multiple lines connecting different parts of Texas.Railroad tracks passed through both villages until they were severed along I-35W just north of downtown Dallas in 1960: local politicians decided instead to merge their two villages into one larger city under designation "Angleton". In 2002–2004, redevelopment spearheaded by then-Mayor Rick Perry led to significant growth within downtown areas surrounding I-635/ TX 290 eastbound; much of this occurred after Perry ordered state troopers to clear brush near several high schools built adjacent to I-635/290 between 2001 and 2003 due to concerns about possible plans for residential development on those properties should they succeed in getting rezoned from commercial property status (the Brush clearing operation was later ruled unconstitutional).[1] According to Mayor Rick Perry himself at that time: " angletons are doing great things right here",[2] indicating that some progress has been made since then Despite this burst of growth throughout Downtown Area I also have noticed increased crime rates especially around nightlife areas such as McKinney Avenue which can be very dangerous especially if you're looking for fun or just want some peace & quiet
