Angleton is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Angleton was founded in 1887 by John W. Angleton and his family. The town was named for General John A. Angleton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Kansas. In 1865, General Angus McDowell's cavalry regiment burned down the Courthouse in what is now Angleton. The post office opened in 1892 and remained open until it closed on December 12, 1923 due to lack of mail volume from the small community. In 1910, local merchants formed a company to build a system of water mains that would provide water for all citizens without charge. The system became known as "Angleton's Water System". In 1935, Angleton petitioned to become a municipality and received approval from the Cameron County Commissionershutting Act No. 2036 which allowed municipalities to be created with populations over 10 residents without first obtaining county approval through an election process entitled "At large". On November 3, 1935, Anglington incorporated as a municipal corporation under Section 5 of Article XVIII of the Texas Constitution providing for municipal corporations with population over 10 residents within 1 mile (2 km) of any school or hospital and having authority to levy taxes not exceeding one-half per cent on all taxable property value within their boundaries

The history of Angleton can be traced back to 1867 when John A. Angleton founded the townsite on a pointy bend in Round Rock Creek below Blue Grass Lake about 12 miles northeast of downtown Dallas. After years of development based on its location at one of several important transportation hubs within Central Texas, Angleton quickly grew into a bustling community that boasted two churches and many businesses including a grocery store, bank, post office and cotton gin (a precursor to today's ChevronTexaco oil refinery). In 1916, following World War I efforts by President Wilson to increase trade with countries across Europe through American exporters such as Texaco (later ExxonMobil), General George C Marshall became secretary of state in America's first presidential term under Woodrow Wilson (1912-1916). As part of his duties as secretary of state, Marshall toured various parts Of America giving speeches promoting American industry and exports - one such speech took place at Attempton High School Auditorium in Austin on July 29th 1916 where he called for increased investment in education throughout America leading to better jobs for Americans living ashore while abroad...the talk also caught the attentionof local businessman John A.Angleton who donated $2,000 towards erecting an auditorium specifically for this speech...the building now houses the old highschool which is still used occasionally for events relatedtoTexaco...a plaque commemorates General Marshall's visit at Attempton High School dated October 9th 1916 Many people erroneously think that anglonensis means "proud Texans" or "sturdy Texans" however this word actually derived from English language origins meaning "Englishmen who have arrived hereabouts." This name stuck because it accurately describes most people who originally moved here from England during this time period including many railroad workers like John A.Angleton himself who were able to bring their British engineering skills along with them when they came to America.. In fact early settlers Tom Cooks (1862) & James Cooks(1865) were both engineers working for Houston & Galveston Railroad respectively so there was definitely some connection between these early immigrants & their new land home.. Today most everyone knows anglonensis simply as "Texans," even if they've never set foot inside what once was called anglonensis!
