Angleton is located about east of Bryan on FM 1960 (formerly US 71). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000,[2] there were 1,468 people residing in the town: 527 households out of which 39% had children under the age of 18 living with them; 50% were married couples living together; 22% had a female householder with no husband present; and 27% were non-families. Of all households 34% were made up of individuals and 15% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2 families; 31% had 3 or more children under age 18 living with them; 11% had 4 or 5 children; 7% had 6 or more children; and 2% did not have any children under age 18 living within their family.

The community grew rapidly because of its location on the Santa Fe Trail and its access to irrigation water from the San Antonio River. cotton ginning began in 1898 and became an important industry until World War I when milling shifted to other technologies such as petroleum refining and plastics production. However, Angleton remained a small agricultural town until after World War II when it became a major manufacturing center for automobiles and other products exported to Latin America and Asia." In 1963-1964 school district consolidation led to the closure of most anglophile schools within Hudspeth County so that all students would be sent to local public schools with high performing magnet programs throughout central Texas which better met their individual needs without sacrificing educational opportunities for anglophile students or parents" . In 1978-1979-----the last years of Republican rule-------anglophile parents were able to reopen some closed anglophile schools through private donations while conservatives controlled both state government and education policymaking making those same closed schools unavailable for enrollment again for many years thereafter" . With recent updates about African American history in Hudspeth County including books being published on black Texans from prehistory up through Reconstruction era (and beyond) there has been renewed interest in open enrollment at closed anglophile schools across Central Texas as well as active support among conservative educators who see value in promoting diversity while providing special educational opportunities for select groups within our community
In 1836, Austin was founded as the capital of the Republic of Texas. The town quickly grew and soon became a center for trade and business. In 1839, General Antonio López de Santa Anna was elected president of the Republic of Texas, and he ordered Angleton to become his provisional capital. The town quickly became a thriving commercial center with numerous businesses and buildings. Angleton's growth continued during the 1840s and 1850s as more people arrived in search of opportunities in the new republic. By 1861, Angleton had reached its peak as an important financial center for Texas. Businesses flourished thanks to its location at the crossroads of several major thoroughfares. However, when Fort Sam Houston was built nearby in 1865, Angleton's fortunes declined rapidly. Its population dwindled from around 1,000 to just 100 by 1870. However, while Angleton's economic decline may have been precipitous, it did not reflect badly on Texans who chose to live there - many found their way back into business after moving away from what they considered an unfriendly legislature or an unappreciative government bureaucracy. In fact, some residents even returned to take advantage of newly available land that had been confiscated by the government in order to establish new businesses or improve existing ones. Despite its difficult times during the 1860s and 1870s, however, Angleton still managed to maintain a strong sense of community culture which helped contribute significantly to its continued success over time
