The first people to live in what is now Angleton were Native Americans who hunted and traded with Mexican settlers. In 1836, General Sam Houston granted land to James Fenton for his rancho de la Bahia (the bay). On February 17, 1837, John Maney patented 33 acres (12 hectares) of this land to Thomas Fenton. In 1839, Isaac Newton moved from Missouri to establish a family farm here that would grow corn and cotton until the mid-19th century. By 1861, when Mexico obtained independence from Spain and became an American republic under President Abraham Lincoln's administration, Angleton had developed into a small community with several stores and two churches. The post office was established at Angleton on October 6, 1868 - its first occupant being Mr. Wm Aulds - later renamed Mrs. Aulds after her husband died in 1870. During Reconstruction (1875-1877), many African Americans left Texas for northern jobs during the Great Migration; however most of them returned home by 1880 because conditions in America were much improved than they had experience in Texas while slavery still prevailed. Between 1865 and 1890 there were only 11 residents recorded as living in Angleton; however since then it has seen an influx of both white and black residents who have enjoyed various aspects of life here including agriculture and commerce which continue today thanks to its location adjacent to Interstate 10A ability to reach most parts of Southwestern US without leaving the city limits
