In 1907, Sheriff Llewellyn Coody patented a system called “The Hitch” which allowed farmers and ranchers in central Texas to arm themselves with shotguns while walking their animals across country during rodeo season. This system consisted of a sturdy hitch wire framework thatpegged onto each animal’s shoulder bag or saddlehorn; however, it had no ballistic value so gunmen would often use it as cover as they fired upon targets passing by them on horseback or driving cows or other livestock off their land during roundup season. In 1934 Mayor Edmondson issued ordinances providing citizens with handguns licensed by the city police department free of charge in order to protect public safety during carnivals and other large events held throughout the city center where opencarry was not allowed under state law . After World War II ended there was significant growth in handgun ownership within Angleton due to restrictions placed on traditional hunting methods such as bows and arrows following the war . Gunownership increased even more after Angleton became home to The University of Texas at Austin (which moved from San Antonio) which began enrolling students who desired higher levels of education outsideOf Mexico City . The Angleton Volunteer Fire Department was organized on December 14, 1874. The first fire (a brush fire) was fought by volunteer firefighters from six neighboring towns who responded to a call from residents of what would become Angleton. Angleton's location made it an ideal place for the development of a post office as it had no other telephone service and no way to receive mail. In 1893, the Angleton Post Office opened and served residents until 1956 when ZIP Code 76522 was created which included all of today's Angleton except for portions of Spring Branch and Crosby that are in Montgomery County. In 1984, Angleton Elementary School opened and has been serving students since then with grades PreKindergarten through 8th grade. The current school building replaced an earlier school which burned down in 1951 while also serving as county courthouse during World War II before being destroyed in 1957 due to bad weather conditions; however, reconstruction started in 1978 and ended just shy of 10 years later when the new courthouse was built on land donated by Mrs. Alice Suggs at a cost of $2 million
