They found a piece of land which they named Hogg's Ranch after their captain. In 1873, Captains James Clements and William Tatum settled around what is now Angleton on Crow Creek as part of the Trinity Land Grant Agreement. At that time there were only two settlements in Lavaca County: San Marcos and Corpus Christi. Captain Tatum donated 640 acres (2 km²) to Lavaca County for use as a county seat. The first post office called "Angleton" was established on July 3, 1865, under the name "Hoggsboro". On November 12, 1886, it changed its name to "Lavaca". In 1902 it changed its name again to "Angleton", after former Congressman George A. Angleton from Texas' 2nd congressional district who had been elected as a Democrat to succeed Sam Houston during Reconstruction following the Civil War. On February 24th of 1904 local citizens ratified an ordinance designating Friday night as Bank Holiday in order to commemorate 100 years since Judge Wimsatt granted liquor licenses in that town on December 17th 1903 (see below). The city eventually merged with other nearby cities and towns in 1985 to form Houston-based Houston Management Company Incorporated (HMC). The history of Angleton begins with its incorporation as a small farming community on the banks of the Hudspeth River. It continued to be a primarily agricultural community until 1945 when HMC opened its millrace plant which led to an increase in industry and commerce in the town. Although anglers still play an important role in Angleton's economy, heavy manufacturing has replaced Fishing as the primary economic activity over time. In 1915, George Washington Angleton died at age 95 years old and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery where he also served as President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1939-1941. His wife Nannie died three years later at age 92 years old after serving as mayor ofangleton for 34 years; she is also buried there alongside her husband and sister-in-law Viola Welshner Hutcheson (1863-1945). A plaque honoring him was placed outside his home in 2006 following a $2 million renovation project which included new landscaping and additions such as a memorial garden dedicated to him and his wife Nannie Annis Wistar Guyer (1886-1965), one of Texas' most well known women politicians during World War II; she represented District 5A (Houston) on various committees including Homebuilders Committee during 1942 through 1945 while serving concurrently as First Lady/Mrs. Dallas Willkie Kennedy (1914-) .

The Stevensons took up land on the south side of the Rio Grande River and started a small ranch there. They were successful farmers and ranchers until World War I when they became soldiers in the American Civil War. After the war, they came back to farming but their son, John A., became an entrepreneur in the oil business. In 1930, he sold his business to Standard Oil Company for $2 million.
