Angleton, Texas is a small town in southern Wheeler County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,638 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by John Noble Angleton and his family. The first post office was established in 1881. In 1912 the name of the town changed to honor General Douglas MacArthur. The community lies on the banks of the Red River which forms its boundary with Wheeler County to the east and west. According to the 2000 census, Angleton has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²). The climate is humid subtropical with very hot summers and mild winters; average monthly temperatures range from 27°F (−3°C) in January to 85°F (29°C) in July. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,524 people residing in Angleton Village proper and 2,127 households outlying units including those located within Wheeler County but not part of either village or annexed into it as part of that county's population growth during that decade. With an effective population size of 3453 people according to censuses conducted subsequent years since 1992 - an increase over 2% due largely to annexation - this makes Angleton one of Texas' fastest-growing communities."
