The town was named for General James Fenton Angleton, who served as a colonel in the Mexican-American War and then as United States Minister to Mexico. Barnes purchased land around the present day Angleton city limits in 1882 and built a small log cabin. He also developed a cattle ranch and planted trees along the banks of the Brazos River. In 1884, Barnes married Laura Bigham, daughter of Judge John Bigham of Fort Worth. The couple set up home on a farm west of Angleton until their death in 1928.
