Angleton is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 439 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brownsville-Midland Area School District. The first people to live here were Spanish settlers who came from Zacatecas, Mexico in 1807 and named it San Fernando de Angleton after their patron saint. In 1836, George A. Angleton founded the town on land that he had acquired from Charles Goodnight for his cattle business. The name "Angleton" is derived from Anglo-Saxon word meaning "place where beans are dried." In 1887, John Waddell built a school and post office in the town. Waddell was an early settler and rancher in this area and also a county judge. He was buried in the old cemetery there. In 1901, an express train derailed near Angleton while traveling to Corpus Christi; as a result of the derailment, many residents lost their homes and businesses (see Railroad Accidents). In 1907, some farmers began growing cotton near what is now Angleton because it was one of the few crops that could be grown north of Abilene without frost damage during winter months. This led to what became known as Cotton Country around Angleton and other neighboring towns such as Lubbock and Midland because of its high quality cotton crop results in low prices for exports when compared to other parts of Texas at that time. Cotton production continued until about 1960 when technology changed with inputs like Monsanto's Roundup herbicide becoming available which ruined most cotton farmers' fields completely making way for pasture or soybean production which has been our mainstay ever since due to irrigation techniques only needing water during drought years even though we have blizzards every year now... anglton santa fe tx history
Angleton was founded in 1881 by John H. Angleton and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly due to the railroad construction in the area, and by 1907 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1915, Angleton had become a community of note due to its location on the Texas Central Railroad. In 1925, Angleton was renamed for General George C. Marshall after he became secretary of defense in American history.
