In this paper, we will explore how common shooting protection features have changed over the years and which ones are most effective for specific weapons. One of the earliest shooters’ safety devices was the Holster Buckle (birthdate unknown). This was an early device that allowed shooters to wear holsters around their waists in order to keep their hands free when firing. The Holster Buckle was developed by Poultney & Sons in 1858 on a request from Colonel John Cushing of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The Holster Buckle had two straps that could be fastened around the shooter’s belt or waistband in order to “buckle” the holster together snugly around his body. Its primary use was as a training device for new soldiers before they were sent into battle. The holster buckle also became popular among civilians after it was used as a security measure at gun shows and other events where guns were being sold. Many people found it more secure than having their hands free while firing RPGs or military assault rifles because they knew that if something happened to them while using their handgun, their assailant would not be able to take it with them afterwards (Fletcher 1994). In 1911, rifle manufacturers began includingComfort controls on some models of pistols; these Comfort controls were designed to reduce recoil by adjusting one or more screws on the frame of the pistol so that it moved vertically up or down within its barrel bed (Logan 1978). By 1912, all automatic pistols had been redesigned with this feature added (Watson 1985), so even single-shot revolvers did not require comfort controls until later in the decade (Logan 1978). By 1935, all automatic pistols had been redesigned again with new safety measures called triggers; these triggers consisted of three small round tabs located just above eachTrigger guard area on both sides of the grip frame (Mannion 1990a). These triggers prevented unintentional fire by reducing movement of either Trigger guard area during accidental firings (Mannion 1990b).
