Andrews, Texas was founded in 1879 by J.D. Andrews and his wife Eliza. The town started as a small farming community with only a few homes and businesses. By the 1920s, Andrews had grown to become one of the largest cities inTexas with over 100,000 residents. In 1929, J.D. Andrews donated land to the city for its first public park which is now called "The Park." The city also built two schools-one for white kids and one for black kids-and developed a downtown area that contains several restaurants and stores. In 1947, Andrew's son Jerald became mayor of Andrews after serving since 1978. During his time as Mayor, he promoted development in the downtown area and made numerous improvements to the city infrastructure including expanding Interstate 20 from Old Flores Road to north side of town and building new roads such as McAllister Street and Commerce Drive.Jerald also helped start the Texas Rangers baseball team in 1984 which still plays today at Angel Stadium in Arlington, Texas!
