Andrews, Texas is a small town located in the Midland region of Texas. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of Hidalgo County and has a land area of only 9 square miles. Andrews was founded in 1845 by John Andrews and his family. The first store in town was built on Main Street and operated for about a year before being closed down due to lack of business. In 1847, Andrew's brother-in-law, James Waddell, opened a general store on West Street which continued to be run until it burned down in 1901. The population of Andrews grew steadily from its early days until the late 1800s when the railroad arrived and changed the economic landscape of the community. With new development came new jobs for local men who had turned their attention to farming after leaving their farmsteads behind during the earlier phases of rural consolidation within Texas. By 1900, there were over 100 businesses operating in Andrews with an average sales volume of $3,500 per month. However, as agriculture became less important and manufacturing took over as the primary focus of local economy, businesses began to close or become ownership changes that didn't result in much growth thereafter. In 1907, James Waddell sold his stake in the company to George Bagley who operated it until his death in 1942. After Bagley's death, control passed through several hands before finally being bought by John O'Brien Sr., one of America's largest cattle ranchers and operator up until his death in 1984. In recent years there have been efforts to redevelop parts of downtown Andrews as part of an effort called "The Town Concept" which aims to bring more vitality and commercial opportunities to what is now a sleepy little town that sits atop some rolling hills overlooking central Midland County (population: 3,596). While redevelopment may not be immediate or widespread throughout town proper given its small size relative to other Midland counties (Hidalgo & Tarrant Counties combined), it does offer some hope for future revitalization efforts should those plans ever come together fruition[1].

A new post office was opened in 1960 and remains open today as part of the USPS Southwestern District which includes all of Kendall County except for Midland where Trinity Postal Service operates a mail annex. The downtown core of Andrews has been preserved as a historic district since 1978 and is now home to several popular restaurants including Gourd's General Store, Patsy's Baked Goods & Coffee House, and Willie's Place Barbecue restaurant. In addition to its namesake store, other notable businesses include: Western Market (now closed), The Juke joint (closed), The Dog House (closed), Little Stoneware Antiques (closed), Shotgun Saloon (closed), Blue Moon Tavern (closed), Pecan Pie Shop (closed) and various small scale businesses not listed here that have contributes to its unique character. Today, Andrews is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions including art galleries, theatres/theater groups/ performances etc., two professional schools - one of which offers graduate degrees - as well as numerous small businesses providing essential services such as grocery stores- gourmet markets- convenience stores- construction companies etc., making it an ideal place to live or visit while staying connected with its rural roots
